I often get asked this question, by some of my vanilla friends who know what I do for a living, and it’s honestly what I believe to be the hardest fetish to explain and to understand. One reason for this is because the term ‘humiliation‘ has such a wide variety of sub-fetishes beneath it, but as an overall fetish, it is really quite simple. Humiliation, in it’s most general form, is basically giving someone control over yourself, or someone taking control of you. It is not always name-calling or degradation, although many who enjoy this fetish do like being humiliated verbally, usually by being called degrading names during sexual play, such as being called a whore, slut, etc. 
Now, the variations of humiliation are quite extensive, because, in my opinion, nearly all forms of fetishes, at their core, involve some type of humiliation. Just consider a few of the more common fetishes that are enjoyed by adults. For example, orgasm denial is a form of humiliation. One must ask for permission to have an orgasm, and then they are denied that privilege, leaving them yearning for some sort of fulfilment. One of the key factors in any relationship that involves humiliation is trust. There must be a sense of trust between the submissive and the Dominant in order for the relationship to work. The submissive must put their entire trust in the Dominant, and the Dominant must be sensitive to the limits of what the submissive is able or emotionally willing to do. There are often limits as to how far the humiliation can or will go, and the submissive puts their trust in the Dominant to keep to these limits. These limits are not always verbally set, but understood between the submissive and the Dominant, as they get to know each other and develop a relationship. But just as in any relationship, any breach of this trust on either side can cause the partnership to fall apart, many times irreversibly so.
One thing to remember when talking about humiliation is that in most cases of erotic humiliation, the submissive is there because they want to be, because they get some sort of fulfilment out of it. While it may be hard for many to grasp the concept or the idea that something humiliating can be a sexual turn-on, it doesn’t mean that the reality is any less true.
